Roost recovers life and nullifies the Flying type until the end of the turn, which can be extremely useful or a disaster. Brave Bird is the recommended attacking move, but if you can't afford the recoil Drill Peck or Steel Wing are at your choice, depending on the coverage you're looking for, seeing as they both have a moderately high base damage and benefit of STAB. Whirlwind works to scare off opponents you don't want to face and to take advantage of Spikes / Stealth Rock, forcing the switch and the consequent HP loss.

The trick is to ware off the opponent with Sandstorm and Toxic and recover with Roost and Leftovers, but Shed Shell is completely crucial unless you're sure you're not facing a Magnezone as it is immune to Sandstorm, Toxic and practically unaffected by Flying moves.

Magnezone counter set, best I could find with Skarmory's limited movepool... Pamtre Berry with Natural Gift is the equivalent to a Ground 70 base power move, and Salac Berry to a 80 base Fighting move but can accidentally be consumed by Skarmory to raise Speed. It's a pretty risky set but weakens Magnezone very much.
